Elemental Issues HEVC Video Processing Challenge at NAB 2013

Media companies are invited to bring video content to booth SU2724 for real-time HEVC encoding

Portland, Ore. – April 5, 2013 – Elemental Technologies, the leading supplier of video solutions for multiscreen content delivery, today issued an industry-wide, high efficiency video coding (HEVC) challenge. The Elemental HEVC Throwdown will kick off at the National Association of Broadcasters conference and exhibition in Las Vegas, April 8-11, and will continue in coming months at other industry events. Elemental will demonstrate real-time HEVC encoding and challenges other video processing vendors to do the same.
Elemental invites potential customers to bring source files of any kind on USB drives to the Elemental booth at NAB (SU2724) for a demonstration of real-time HEVC encoding. Alternatively, visitors to the booth interested in taking up the challenge may simply borrow Elemental content. As a part of the challenge, attendees will see Elemental H.265 encoding of their content, and streaming delivery of 500K output to a tablet device and 1080p output to a high definition television. Participants are encouraged to visit other video processing companies at NAB to request the same demonstration of capabilities.

“HEVC promises to deliver comparable quality at 50% of the bit rate of today’s video codecs,” said Keith Wymbs, VP marketing at Elemental. “Currently, there is a lot of discussion about HEVC encoding, but we are delivering a fully functional implementation at NAB. HEVC has a bright future and industry leaders can experience it today in the Elemental booth at NAB rather than merely viewing it on a product roadmap.”

The computational intensity of HEVC encoding lends itself perfectly to the performance advantage available with Elemental video processing solutions. Elemental has deep experience developing video codecs from open specifications to full implementation using general-purpose programmable architectures (GPUs and CPUs). Video processing software from Elemental delivers H.265 content at very low video bit rates to a wide variety of viewing devices, creating ubiquity that will expand delivery of high-quality, high-resolution video over bandwidth-constrained networks and richly reward content providers, broadcasters and consumers.

In addition to real-time H.265 encoding, Elemental will also offer a second, side-by-side demonstration of H.265 and H.264 encoding at NAB that highlights the quality improvements attainable with HEVC using solutions from Elemental.
